I work in the Witte building just around the other side of the bridge and I agree, they look great. Makes me wonder what took so long? I hope they are well cared-for, and that the rest of the landscaping/grass/etc. is completed soon.
I saw this on my downtown run yesterday. Looked like there was irrigation. I also think the ugly yews on the southside of the street were removed and replaced with grasses and trees.

That side of Washington has long been abysmal.
Will the new sidewalk built there be extended north next to the trees? Hope so.

There was a water main break here about seven months ago--heaving pavement and all--and perhaps that precipitated some of the improvements.
